The Endless Ocean

It is about 3 o’clock Key West time. I’m the last one of the group up. I just don’t feel tired enough to head to bed yet. I swam alone for awhile and enjoyed the solitude. Then rain started pouring down. It quickly got too cold to swim so I’ve been sitting on the covered patio watching the rain fall down. Very nice evening.

We had our best day yet in KW, imho. We chartered a boat this afternoon for 4 hours. It was just the six of us and the captain. He supplied some sodas and water and let us bring our own booze aboard (we chose Mike’s). We ended up first going to watch dolphins. It was amazing to see them in their natural environment (ie the open ocean and not a tank at Seaworld). They weren’t in a “playful” mood so they never came close to the boat. But it was great seeing them even from a distance. The boat was even equipped with an underwater mic so we could listen to them call to one another. I never knew dolphins could make such noises. I had always thought dolphins made clicking and squaking noises. They can do a lot more than that! The one we kept hearing repeatedly sounded like a fart. Sorry for the crude comparison but that is what it sounded like.

After watching the dolphins for awhile, we headed to another part of the ocean where we all got out of the boat to snorkel. Bobby and I had gone snorkeling before in Mexico but that doesn’t even compare to what we did today. The water was perfect for snorkeling - very clear and calm. Our first big sighting was of a mammoth sea turtle. At first we noticed these fish trying to eat off a rock. As we got closer, the rock started to move. That is when we realized it was a huge turtle. It was gigantic!! Once it was awakened it started swimming around. Of course, I yelled for the rest of the group to come and see and then started swimming along with the turtle. A few times I dove down to swim beside it (about 6 feet away). The turtle was as big as I am! It was truly amazing.

We also saw two other turtles (though neither nearly as large as the first), a few rays, crabs, a baracuda, and countless numbers of beautiful fish. My favorite of the fishes was a parot fish. It has green, orange, pink, and purple coloring. Absolutely beautiful!

After snorkeling, we asked Captain Tom what he would do if this were his day off. So he took us to a sandbar in the middle of the ocean. We all jumped out into 4-5 foot water with drinks in hand and relaxed. It was wonderful. The water was crystal clear, the bottom was white and sandy, and the view was all water and tree covered islands. It was a great way to end our boat trip.

After recuperating at the house for a few hours (read drinking by the pool), we headed to Meson de Pepe. This is a great Cuban restraurant we visited last time we were here. The food is excellent and the mojitos are the best I have ever had. If you ever come here, be sure to eat there at least once.

So that was our day. In a nutshell - FAB U LOUS!!

Tomorrow is our last full day here. I’ll make sure to enjoy every minute of it.
