Server Problems
June 25th, 2004 by Ian
For the past two hours I have been trying to fix a problem with my mail server. I discovered this afternoon that all outgoing email from the past two days was stuck in the mail queue. For some reason, all outgoing mail was failing. Of course, I assumed that my half-assed network admin skills caused the problem. The past two hours I’ve been trying everything I know to fix the problem.. I finally figured out that I was unable to telnet to any other mail server over port 25. After more testing I realized that it wasn’t my system causing the problem.
So I decide to call my ISP, which was recently bought by another ISP. It turns out that when they setup my account in their new system, they automatically put me on their “filter list”. So I couldn’t connect to any other servers’ port 25. Thus, no outgoing mail. The help desk guy was very helpful anf fixed the problem quickly. I didn’t want to yell at him because I knew he had nothing to do with the problem. But it pisses me off that they would make such a change and notify their customers. If there were any other DSL provider I could use, I would drop grandecom in a second. Unfortunately, they have a stranglehold on my neighborhood so I am stuck with them.
If anyone reading this gets a late email from Bobby or I, you now know why. Sorry for the inconvenience. I’m just happy to know that I’m not such a bad network admin afterall ![]()
