Confessions in a Cubicle
November 22nd, 2005 by Ian
So I promised a review of Madonna’s new album. I decided it was time I finally did it. And there is no better time or place to review an album than at work. I have nothing better to do
Overall, I am underwhelmed with the album. I don’t think this is because the album is bad, it is more due to the hype being so huge. Before this album was released there was news everyehwere about it. Everyone was talking about how this was going to be the great dance album from Madonna that would erase our memories of her last album (which I kind of enjoyed). I read reviews on towleroad and arjanwrites that raved about the album. Some people were saying the album was as good as or better than “Ray of Light”. I couldn’t wait to get my hands on the cd.
Unfortunately, the album doesn’t live up to the hype. It is a good album - but it is not “Ray of Light” or one of the greatest dance albums of the year (so far that title goes to Andy Bell’s “Crazy”). It is just a nice Madonna album with a few good beats, some catchy choruses, and some lyrics that are painful to listen to.
My favorite songs on the album is “Jump”. It is a great pop song with a good hook. Gets me bopping around the cube every time. “Let It Will Be”, “How High” and “Sorry” are good songs as well. “Sorry” would be even better if she would have removed the section with her saying “I’m sorry” in different languages. It just comes off as trite. (Is that a word? Did I spell it write? You should know by now spell check is not used on this blog).
“I Love New York” has to win for worst lyrics. They just made me burst out laughing the first time I heard them.
I don’t like cities but I like New York
Other places make me feel like a dork
Los Angeles is for people who sleep
Paris and London, baby, you can keep
Other cities always make me mad
Other places always make me sad
No other city will make me glad
Except New York, I love New York
If you don’t like my attitude then you can f off
Just go to Texas, isn’t that where they golf
The music in the song is good. It could have even been a great dance song. But with those lyrics it just falls flat. Somebody should have stopped her before she ruined the song.
The other songs are the album are just okay. Not amazing, but not horrible. They don’t really stand out on their own. I’ll keep listening to the cd and enjoying it, but it isn’t an album I would consider a classic. Just good pop music to work along with.
Those lyrics sound like a poem I wrote in 4th grade, except my poem was about dogs….
I think the White Stripes have really ruined what could’ve been a great song with retarded lyrics, too. Happy Turkey Day to all y’all!
