Office Reorg
February 2nd, 2006 by Ian
For the past few weeks I’ve been working on reorganizing my office. I wanted to make better use of the space I had, add more storage, and give myself a better sewing/project area. The reorg had a slow start. I bought one new table at Ikea in January, but they were out of stock of the other table I wanted. I waited two and half weeks for them to get it in, but still had not arrived. During this time, my office was an absolute wreck. Following regular Ian fashion, I started moving things around without having a plan or the new furniture. I was just trying to get ideas. What I got was an office that looked like a tornado hit it.
After waiting for almost 3 weeks for my other Ikea table, I decided I had to do something about the mess. So last week I got to work……or it might be better to say, I got to shopping. I bought storage boxes, magazine boxes, drawer units, drawer organizers, shelves, filing cabinet, and I can’t remember what else. After the all that glorious shopping, I got my ass in gear and started working on putting the office together.
It has turned out great! And it has been much cheaper than I originally planned. I was surprised to find I didn’t need the extra table from Ikea. I was also able to find a lot of inexpensive items by going from store to store to store. The setup has turned out great. I have so much more working area now. A drawer unit has gone in next to the desk to help me keep pens, post its, scissors, paper, etc all organized. My desk has no drawers so these items used to just litter the entire surface. A new filing cabinet was purchased to replace the old dented one that I’ve had since college. Shelves finally went up on one wall (I’ve had one of the shelves for 3 years now). The layout has been completely changed. I now have a proper sewing/project area made of a tall cutting/assembly table and a regular height sewing table. I also now have a proper desk area with drawers and accessible files. Oh, and I have a huge idea/inspiration board for posting pictures, articles, etc.
The whole setup is working out wonderfully. I’ve already started a new sewing project and I’m loving the setup. I have enough room to really spread out when cutting and sewing. And since I have so much room, the project doesn’t spread to all other surfaces in my office and create a mess.
I still have some more work to do. I have two lamps my grandmother gave me that I need to hang. They are sentimental to me because I grew up with them hanging in my grandparents’ living room. It will be nice to have that little touch of family history in my office. Plus, they are really cool! They have a very retro-modern look. I also need to finish organizing my closet, utilize the new shelves more, find a printer stand, and hang some art. I’ll post pictures when it is all done. Hopefully within a month.
A month?!?!! Sheesh, do you need some film?
I don’t want to post pics until it looks marvelous! And right now it is just good. My readers expect better than good. And I don’t want to disappoint them.
You inspire me to at least *start* one of my many planned decorating projects. I Just wanted you to know I linked to you! I figured you wouldn’t mind, because who doesn’t love more exposure, right?
